Yes, you read right…Rainbow of fruits and vegetables

Until recently I had no idea that such exist

We know about fruits and vegetables but the idea that they can be classified as Rainbow is not well known and for some, a new idea altogether.

Follow me on this journey to know all about the Rainbow of fruits and vegetables and their health benefits.

Rainbow of fruits and vegetables is the classification of fruits and vegetables based on their colors and each color has certain health benefits associated with it.

Rainbow of fruits and vegetables does not only consist of the typical colors of a rainbow (which are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) but it is also has some additions like white, tan and brown).

Rainbow of fruits and vegetables are basically classified into 5 color groups:

·         Green

·         Yellow / Orange

·         Red

·         Blue / Purple

·         White / Tan / Brown

 

Green fruits and Vegetables

Green fruits and vegetables contains nutrients such as Vitamin K, magnesium, potassium, dietary nitrates and folates which are associated with heart health. They also have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. They are also immunity boosters, prevents cancer, aids healthy bones, improves digestions and supports eye health (good eyesight).

 Examples of Green vegetables are: Avocado, Bean sprouts, Green bell pepper, Broccoli, Cabbage, Celery, Cucumber, Green beans, Kale, Spinach and Okra. 

Examples of Green fruits are: Green tea, Green apples, Kiwi, Limes, Olives and Pears. 


Yellow/Orange fruits and Vegetables  

Yellow / Orange fruits and vegetables are good for the digestive tracts and are particularly good in the support of reproductive health of men and women. They also lower cholesterol, boost eye health, prevents cancer, promotes healthy heart, joints and tissues.

Examples of Yellow / Orange vegetables are: Carrot, Turmeric, Orange bell pepper, Ginger & Yellow Bell pepper.

Examples of Yellow / Orange fruits are: Bananas, Lemons and pineapple. 




Red fruits and Vegetables

Red fruits and vegetables are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory which prevents oxidative stress and inflammation. They also decrease blood pressure, helps in cell renewal, helps in cancer prevention, good for skin protection and heart health.

Examples of Red vegetables are: Red cabbage, Red Bell pepper, Tomatoes, Beet roots and Red onion.

Examples of Red fruits are: Red apples, Blood oranges, Cherries, Cranberries, Nectarines, Pink grapefruit, Pomegranate, Raspberries, Red currants, Red plums, Strawberries and Watermelon.

Blue/Purple fruits and Vegetables 

Blue / Purple fruits and vegetables contains nutrients that boosts memory, have anti-aging properties, supports healthy heart, urinary system and blood vessels. 

Examples of Blue / Purple vegetables are: Beetroot, purple bell peppers, purple kale, purple carrots, purple cauliflower and Turnips.

Examples of Blue / Purple fruits are: Black berries, Blue berries, Figs, Plums/prunes, Purple grapes and Raisins.



White/Tan/Brown fruits and Vegetables 

White / Tan / Brown fruits and vegetables contains nutrients high in potassium, fiber, beta-glucans, lignans and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). They lower cholesterol, prevents ulcers, boosts immune system, healthy heart and colon. 

Examples of White / Tan / Brown vegetables are: Potatoes, Mushrooms, white eggplant (Garden egg), white cauliflower, white onion, white garlic, white corn, white beans and white cabbage.

Examples of White / Tan / Brown fruits are: White melon, white currants, Coconut, Baobab fruit.

This is not an exhaustive list but it covers fruits and vegetables that are common, easily sourced and readily available (albeit some are seasonal).

From the above, it can be deduced that health benefits of the Rainbow fruits and vegetables should and cannot be overlooked. I recommend that more of these foods are incorporated into our diets, thereby providing the body with the nutrients to function at its best.

It is said that half of a plate of meal should contain fruits and vegetables which is recommended for a healthy lifestyle. These school of thoughts have naturally progressed to a few phenomenon and phrases with my all-time best “Eat A Rainbow”
